Ever wonder what it is really like to help a student with a writing project? It involves a lot more than talking about where the commas go. Working with the whole writer–not just their writing–requires sharp interpersonal skills and nuanced approaches. In this session, we will walk you through a variety of scenarios that we have encountered in the LCC Writing Center, ranging from typical to challenging, and we will ask you to imagine what kinds of strategies you might employ. Our tutors will then discuss how they handled each scenario, reflecting on what worked well and how they might handle a similar future situation. It might surprise you to learn what we discuss with students, and we hope the strategies we share will be applicable to other one-on-one engagements you might have with students, no matter what type of work you do at the college.
