Facilitated by Tim Deines and Benjamin Garrett

This session will engage faculty and others around the question of how we value the use of English in the classroom. As faculty, how do you think about and assess English as a medium of communication? Do you assume a notion of ‘Standard American English’ (SAE) as your default measure? How do you react to and evaluate students who submit work that does not appear to be written according to SAE rules? Benjamin Garrett and Tim Deines want to engage you in dialogue around these questions and others, unpack some of the assumptions informing them, and propose alternative ways of thinking about SAE and its limitations in today’s college classroom.
