Participants will learn about the benefits of exercise on the brain, including improvements in cognitive functioning, memory retention, and the ability to focus. Having students perform a bout of physical exercise before an assessment is an effective way to reduce anxiety and manage stress and arousal levels. This helps students move closer to an optimal state of mind before taking an exam or giving a presentation. The goal of our workshop at the CTE is to highlight exercise as a proven pedagogy strategy that faculty can utilize with almost no alteration of their course or teaching methods. We will share data from research being done at LCC that specifically focuses on the effects of cardiovascular exercise and student success. Discussion will follow regarding how faculty can incorporate exercise into their courses so students can experience the benefits. Participants are encouraged to bring their sneakers! We will check out the fitness center for a short stress relief walk or other adaptive movement to experience how we give brain power!

Follow-up will consist of reaching out to participants and offering to work with anyone interested in implementing exercise into their courses. Note: It does not necessarily mean that class time must be used for exercise. We will collaborate with each faculty member to determine the most feasible way to ask how students will complete exercises before an assessment.
