Open Learning, Open Educational Resources & Scholarship

“Far too much work in educational technology starts with tools, when what we need to start with is humans.”- Sean Michael Morris

This week are taking a look at Open Learning, Open Resources, Open Ed Tech and how they relate to Scholarship. Open Learning is a method for acquiring knowledge based on open educational resources, open source technologies and platforms that facilitate open discussions and online communities. Other aspects of open learning aim to allow students interest-guided learning, collaborative and/or social learning.
Facilitation of open learning includes opportunities for students to explore materials that are public, easily accessible, and free or very low cost.

Keep in mind, a small step can have a big impact, so utilizing even one aspect of open learning could prove to be useful for you and your students.

Please begin by exploring this PADLET that describes Open Learning and Ed Tech opportunities right here at LCC.  Next, for some thoughts about open learning as it relates to social justice, read this blog post by Jesse Stommel.  Please jot down thoughts and questions about this week’s materials to bring to our ORT on Thursday.
Joining us for our ORT session on Thursday will be Denise Warner, IE Faculty and CTE Open Educational Resources Faculty Fellow, to talk about Open Educational Resources.  And Suzanne Bernsten,  Web Services Librarian and CTE Faculty Fellow, who will give us a bit of background on the 400 Words Assignment and show you how to submit your 400 Word Essays to the website (not due until the last day of class). How to post to 400 words website. ACCESS CODE to Submit Essay is: TLTT (all caps).
