As a math tutor at Lansing Community College, I have the privelage of working with many different students and interacting with many different people on a daily basis. I tutor in the areas of Math, Physics and Computer Science. I believe Lansing Community College offers an education as well as an experience and home for people from any walk of life.
LCC offers affordable an accessible education for all. Classes are usually relatively small compared to most other larger universities. This keeps the classroom setting intimate, and you get to know your classmates a well as faculty a lot better and have a more personal connection with them. Many faculty who teach also work where I do at the Learning Commons and offer students additional time to get to know them and help them with course work.
One tenant and pillar of guidance that we follow at the Learning Commons is something that I always have subscribed too and try to embody. We try too offer support and connection outside of the class material and tutoring that we offer. I want the Learning Commons to feel like a cool place that students can come hang out and meet up with their classmates or take a breather and maybe just unwind a little bit. We try to build a rapport and serve as a general mentor to students first and let the tutoring and coursework help come naturally. I believe this is what keeps students coming back and why the Learning Commons continues to be a thriving and popular space for students to hang out in.
I want students from all walks of life to feel welcome at Lansing Community College and as a consequence the Learning Commons where I work. I try to make sure I am approachable and listening, understanding and friendly whenever I am there. LCC provides many services and embodies many values that makes this goal possible. Many services and extra curricular things are tailored to student support and to be as welcoming as possible. I think the areas that I tutor in can be intimidating and frustrating for some. I believe in everyones ability to do well in whatever course they take and hope that I can make that transition a little bit easier. I want everyone to feel like they have all of the tools and all of the support systems necessary in order to be successful acadmically, and also feel like they are enjoying their time and have a welcoming and inviting college that they can attend.
